; AHIARI'rIE-PONATAHI MEETING I DIG PATRIOTIC EFFORT . AT CARTERI ON. I LARGE ATTENDANCE DAY AND NIGHT ("Times-Age ' Special.> Favoured with exceptional weather conditions on Saturday the combined Abiaruhe-Ponatahi Sports and Paddy's Market Carnival held or. the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society's spacious Showgrounds was the rrmsi outstanding event that has been held in the district for ears From early morning a steady stream of visitors from all parts e fthe district gathered on the grounds and the attendance was exceptionally large. People flocked to the Paddy's .Market and other popular stalls and great business was recorded. It is considered that the ,i.(ings will total the best part of JC. 1000. At night there was another very large attendance and like the afternoon big business was done. The horse sports were a splendid success and excellent entries wore received for all competitions. The Wairarapa interhouso girls, with their spectacular marching, created great interest and they were warmly'applauded for their excellent bearing. The Wairarapa College Pipe Band marched on to the grounds playing spirited Scottish airs and with the Carterton Municipal Silver Band, contributed first-class music during the afternoon's proceedings. At night Highland dancing and dancing on the green were enjoyed by all. The various games of skill at night, including one by members of the Masterton R.S.A. assisted by members of the Carterton R.S.A. did good business. The tearooms which were looked after by members of the W.D.F.U. were exceptionally busy both in the afternoon and evening. The soft drinks and ice cream stall had to be replenished on more than one occasion. The Fire Brigade side show had many visitors and a merry-go-round was a source of delight to the children. The ladies of I the Paddy's Market stall did a roaring trade, and sold meat, vegetables, books, articles of wear. etc. Those who were in charge of the stalls worked hard and arc deserving of great praise for the manner in which they rose to the occasion. The secretary. Mr Leslie H. Smart, assisted by Miss Mollie Smart and the stewards of the Sports Club all worked with the one object in view and it must be satisfactory to all who were actively connected with the carnival to know that their efforts, combined with the public's attendance, resulted in such a successful undertaking. The receipts at gates during the afternoon amounted to £127 IDs, the night takings were £47 18s. making the total gate receipts £174 18s.
