CARTERTON

RACES AT CLAREVILLE CLASH WITH QUEEN CARNIVAL. ("Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Racing Club's stewards was held . last evening, Mr W. Howard Booth presiding. There were also present: Mesfcg Geo. A. Vincent W. C.’Deller. L. H!*Smart, F. C. Yule, P. A. Cole. V. L. Robinson, E. J, Matson and the secretary, Mr H Mortenson. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. Johnston, C. Jensen, J. C. Harp. P. Bain. Geo. Eaton, I-I. J. Brown and A. O. /Xbbott. The treasurer reported a debit balance at the Bank of New Zealand of £7lB 9s. Receipts since the last meeting totalled £ 106 Is 7d. Accounts totalling £llB 7s fid were passed for payment. The chairman mentioned that the Air Force Queen would hold a carnival at Masterton on the day of the Carterton races, when the New Zealand Air Force Band would be present. ■ Along with the secretary he had ap- i proached the Queen Carnival Committee and pointed out that the carni-' val event would clash with the Racing Club's meeting. The matter had come as a bombshell to the stewards, and they had endeavoured io prevent the clashing. They had been led to under- j stand that the Air Force Band was > making a tour and had arranged this , particular date which could not be altered. Suggestions had been made by the Queen Carnival Committee that the difficulty might be overcome by getting the band to attend the races during the day and that an extra: charge be made for admission to the! races of Is, this amount to go towards ! the Queen Carnival fund, and that the; Racing Club give its support to the! gathering at night at Masterton. Mr: Booth said that Masterton had made: an cifort to alter the date but had, found that then there would be a; clash with the Bideford and Maurice-; ville sports gatherings. It seemed that; the only alternative was for the slew-' ards to agree to make an extra charge; of the shilling and secure the services, of the band at the races. Members generally were not agree-; able to the suggestion of an extra gate* charge, and expressed surprise that the; Masterton Carnival Committee on! which there were racing men. had; overlooked the clash of dates, Carter-i ton's race date had been known! months ago, having been decided by, the Racing Conference. After considerable discussion it was; decided that 75 per cent of the gale ( over an average of the last three race; meetings be offered to the Air Force Queen Committee for the band to play; at the races and that no extra charge* be made at the gate. 1 This decision was then conveyed to , the Masterton Committee by tele- . phone, but no finality was reached. The offer of Messrs Murrel and Fox , to run an indicator totalisator at the ; Carterton races was accepted. The offer of the Masterton Racing j Club to lend jockey's colours to the club was received with thanks Mr McDonald’s offer to broadcast the; running of each race on March 8 was accepted. I Mr Price wrote notifying that his f services as starter at the meeting! would be available, . The tender of Mr Williams, of Woodville. was accepted for the publican's booth, and that of Printers Ltd. for the printing of the race books.

It was resolved that tradesmen in Carterton. Greytown. Masterton, Featherston and Martinborough be asked to close their business premises at 11 o’clock on March 8. Four new members were elected. 1 It was announced that nominations for the races would close at Carterton; with the secretary. .Mr Mortenson, at; 9 o’clock on Tuesday next. |

BELVEDERE GATHERING ENJOYABLE LANCE. Last evening, despite the inclement I weather, there was a good attendance at the dance held in the Belvedere Schoolroom. The music for the dancing was played by Mrs Rogers in her usual capable manner. The duties of M.C. were excellently carried out by Mr A. E. Reid. During the evetting Mr A. Morris played an extra on his piano accordeon. The dance was a most enjoyable one and the arrangements were complete in every detail. Personal Items.
