TALK IN BULGARIA
CRITICISM OP THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER BASED ON DISTORTION OF WORDS. FRIENDLY WARNING GIVEN. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY. February 14. According tn reports from Sofia. Bulgarian newspapers arc expressing dissatisfaction to Mr. Churchill's reference to Bulgaria in his broadcast on February 8. A suggestion in the papers, above all in the “Zaria.” that Mr. Churchill advised Bulgaria to attack the German forces and abandon her neutrality is a travesty of his words. It was precisely because Bulgarian independence and neutrality were apparently being abandoned through the admission of large numbers of German air force personnel, and because large numbers of Gorman troops arc now on the Bulgarian borders with no other intention than to - enter the country, that Mr. Churchill gave a firm but friendly warning. It has been noted that the Bulgarian Press once more denies that there are German troops in Bulgarian territory. Mr. Churchill did not ask Bulgaria to abandon her neutrality in favour of Britain or anyone else, but to preserve and defend it. He did not suggesst that Bulgaria should attack Germany. It was precisely because Britain wishes Bulgaria to come up to her oft-expressed intentions of defending her neutrality and independence that Mr. Churchill’s warning was given.
