CARTERTON RACING Cl .UP,
ANNUAL MEETINC ON MARCH 3. NOMINATIONS CLOSE ON • TUESDAY. Nominations for the annual race meeting of the Carterton Racing Club at Clarevillo on March' 8 will close with, the secretary. Mr 11. Mortenson at hist office. Carterton. mi Tuesday. February 18 at 9 p.ni. / Mona's Song. Mona's Song added the Racing Club Handicap to an already good list at the Gore meeting, and her winnings for the season now total £B4O from three wins, one second and three thirds in nine starts. Her other successes have been the Southland and Invercargill Cups. Owned and trained by F. W. Ellis, of Invercargill. Mona's Song will face her stiffest test for the season in the Dunedin Cup. but she has been finishing on solidly over a middle distance, and the extra two furlongs at Wingatui should not worry her. Mona’s Song is a seven-year-old brown mai*e by Song Bird from Kyleboa. by Balboa from Lady Kyle, by Charlemagne 11. from Strathpeffer. by Birkenhead. and tracing to Idalia (Imp.) by Cambuscan.
1 Stiff Task for Royal Chief. Royal Chief has been set a stif! task ! in being asked to carry lOst 41b over the mile and a half of the Dunedin Cup. His only previous experience in the race was in 1939. when he made a poor showing under 9si 81b„ but won the Hazlett Gold Cup on the second day. Silver Ring holds tho winning weigh.t-earrying record in the Dunedin Cup. defeating Senior (7st. 61b.) when ! carrying lOst 41b in 1936. Royal Chief ■ won the Metropolitan Handicap at Rici carton in November under 9st 121 b. I but he was then at the peak of his form .and though ho ran two good races in three starts at Tronthain. some of his ‘■punch" was missing from his finishing runs. It would bo n fitting wind-up to a grand career if Royal Chief were to add the Dunedin Cup to his record, but the task looks beyond him. Trench Fight and Wardress will both carry Bst. I lib., and on a slightly easy track will have prospects, especially Wardress, which, shotikl run out tho distance solidly. I RACING FIXTURES Fob. 17.—Waikato. Feb. 20, 22. — Dunedin.
