CARTERTON
BOWLING SINGLES WON’ BY F. HARRINGTON ("Times-Age” Special.) The final game in lhe Carterton Club’s single championship was played evening between F. Harrington lives? and C. C. Callender (one life). The game was noticeable for the excellent drawing on the part of both players, and it was a treat to see the shots that were played. Callender played the most consistent shots, outdrawing his opponent on many occasions when he would be holding the shot. At the 14th end the scores were 15 points to 8 in favour of Callender. On the 15th head Harrington got a 4 bringing him within 3 points of Callender's score. In the next end Callender drew 2 making the score 17/12. The 17th and 18th end saw Harrington get a 2 and a 3, equalising the score. 17/17; Callender got a brace and Harrington T, the board reading 19,18 in favour of Callender. Then Harrington drew 2 which Callender failed to dislodge leaving Harrington the winner by one point, 20/19. The winner, who is only a young player, has played very steady bowls over the past two seasons. He went through the games this year without a loss and met some formidable opponents. CARTERTON v. EKETAHUNA. Eketahuna will send six rinks to Carterton at the weekend to play a return match against the local club. Personal Items. News was received in Carterton yesterday of the death of Mrs Lambert j Smith, of Auckland. The deceased, I who had been ailing for a very long time, was a sister of Mrs J. McKnight,. of Dixon Street to whom the sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be ex- ! tended. Pte. Harry Humphries, who went away with an early New Zealand Contingent for Carterton, and who was badly injured in Egypt by the explosion of detonators, losing his sight, has returned to Carterton. Except for his disability, Pte. Humphries looks well, and is very cheerful. Home Guard. There was a very large and enthusiastic number of Home Guards present at the weekly drill on the Carterton Showgrounds last evening when jlf* several platoons were put through their drill. Good progress is being made by the men.
