A radio message announced that Marshal Goering, after the death of Major Wieck, sent a radio message to the R.A.F., who replied that Major Wieck was not a prisoner and was not listed among the casualties. Major Wieck's machine, according to the announcer, crashed in the English Channel after a dogfight with a Spitfire. Another pilot of Major Wieck's squadron, who claimed that he shot down the Spitfire, reported that Major Wieck baled out. but the rescue launches failed to trace Major Wieck or his plane.
