SHIPPING LOSSES

AGAIN WELL BELOW WAR AVERAGE. FIGURES FOR WEEK ENDED ON JANUARY 27. Shipping losses for the week ended January 27 were again well below the average for the war, the 8.8. C. reports. Seven British ships, aggregating 23,514 tons, and 2 Allied ships of 10,090 tons, a total of 33.604 tons, were lost. There were no neutral shipping losses. A Press Association cablegram states that although slightly above the average for the month of January, the latest figure is considerably lower than the weekly average for the whole war. which including the Dunkirk losses, is about 63,500 tons. It may be stated that the weekly sinking figures form a fair indication i f the strength and success of the U-boat campaign as the total tonnage of British and Allied shipping at sea, week in and week out. does not greatly vary. \
