PATRIOTIC CARNIVAL

NURSING SERVICES QUEEN • SELECTED MISS BARBARA BARTON CHOSEN. CAMPAIGN NOW LAUNCHED. At a most enthusiastic meeting o£ representatives of various social organisations held last evening Miss Barbara Barton was selected as the nursing services queen for the forthcoming carnival. Miss Barton is a qualified V.A.D. and is a member of the St. John .Ambulance Division. Mr J. T. W. Jones presided.

The following executive committee was formed: Chairman. Mr Norman Lee; deputy chairman, Mr J. W. T. Jones; secretary, Mr D. T. Herbert; treasurers, Messrs Low and Cunningham; delegate to central committee, Mr Farrell; Red Cross sub-centre. Mrs G. Tolhurst; St. John Ambulance, Miss Whitehouse: registered nurses. Mrs Robertson: hospital. Miss Barnett. The following delegates were appointed to organise their respective organisations: Misses Barnett and Pearson (Hospital), Mrs Pither and Miss Whiteman (St. John Ambulance), Mrs Tolhurst and Miss Diggins (Red Cr4ss), Mrs C. H. McKenzie and Mrs Robertson (registered nurses), Sisters Grant and Robinson (Hospital sisters). Nurses Holbrooke and Turney (student nurses). Mrs Bunny and Mrs Stilburn (Do Vincent de Paul Society). Mrs Deans and Miss J. Douglas (V.A.D.’s), Mrs Drummond and Miss Kummer (Welfare League), Mi's Major and Miss Q. Allan (Girl Guides), Mrs G. Morice and Miss Tankersley (W.C.T.U.), Mrs Prior and Mrs Judd (Methodist), Miss Rutherford and Mr Donovan (country districts Red Cross). Mrs A. Forsberg (Mauriceville Red Cross). Mrs Dixon and Mrs McCord (Women’s Auxiliary of the Labour Party). Mrs Cook and Mrs Borthwick (Women's Auxiliary of the National Party), Miss N. Morrison (Country Girls’ Party), Mrs Dagg (Women’s Institute). Mrs Taylor (Townswomen’s Guild). Messrs Me* Quaid. Morrison and Deans (Men's Division St. John .Ambulance). Messrs Gaze and Coleman tY.M.C.A.), Messrs Askew and Daly (Hospital staff), Mesdames Flannery and L. L. Jones, Misses Clemas and Jones. Sister Brown and Mrs E. W. Payton (various). The above delegates will report to their respective organisations and bring down suggestions to the executive committee, at a meeting to be held next Friday at 7.30 p.m. Miss Barnett reported that the sale of badges was now under way and good progress was being made. The central depot arrangements for the supply of badges is in the hands of Mr C. W. Gaze at the Y.M.C.A. The offer of Mrs R. Page to allow ‘.he use of a shop in Perry Street was accepted with thanks. Mr M. Rawlins’s offer of a pedigree Labrador pup was also accepted with thanks. The Amateur Theatrical Society's offer of the first night's takings at their forthcoming play was accepted with thanks.

Various suggestions were put forward for the raising of funds. It was reported that a shop day would be held next Wednesday by Miss Nancy Morrison and her assistants and anyone able to assist in the way of goods, etc., are asked to do so. The Women’s National Welfare League intend holding a bridge evening oh Monday. February 10.

WELFARE LEAGUE SUPPORT FOR NURSING SERVICES QUEEN. BRIDGE PARTY ARRANGED. Tiie Women's National Welfare League held a special meeting in the Midland Hotel yesterday afternoon to consider ways and means of supporting the Nursing Sers ices Queen, Miss Barbara Barton. Those present were: Miss Kummer (presiding), Mcsdamcs R. C. Drummond. H, E Pither, H. P Harrison. A. W. MrKemtie, E. J. Coleman, S. J. Munn, G G. Tolhurst, G H. Collie, S. M Kilgour and Miss Wilson. Apologies for absence wore received from Mosdumes T. Jordan. S. Fletcher and R. Whyborn. and the Misses Boddington and Valkmce. it was decided to hold a bridge evening m the Municipal Social Hall on February 10 in aid of the Nursing Services Queen. Anyone desiring t<» attend can arrange their own tables and should communicate with Miss Kummer. phone IC6B. Patrons are asked to bring their i-wn tables and cards where possible. AH members are to be asked to give all the support they can to this big effort by tiie league in support of the Nursing Services Queen by helping either by arranging tables, assisting with the supner or by donations.
