His Honour Mr. Justice Ostler has been appointed President of the Prisons Board.
Lieutenant A. L. Hibbs, D.C.M.. has returned to Masterton after undergoing a special course of instruction at Foxton in connection with Home Guard training. Mr. G. L. Riley, is to relinquish his position as assistant-general secretary of the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation to take over the general secretaryship of the New Zealand Drapers', Clothiers'. Mercers', and Footwear Retailers' Federation.
The retirement on superannuation of Mr. John Wood, engineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department, will take place next month. His successor’ will probably be Mr. T, Newnham, assistant engineer-in-chief. Mr, Newnham was born in Christchurch and has been in the department since his youth.

The recent promotion of SergeantMajor C. E. Rogers, of the Masterton Defence Office to the rank of lieutenant is deservedly popular throughout the Wairarapa. Lieut. Rogers has had a long career in the army. His first, association with the armed forces was in 1906. in Hie volunteer days, when he was for a period a member of the D. Battery, a unit that had a recognised name for smartness and efficiency. After a time spent in Gisborne.. Lieut. Rogers rejoined the D Battery and in 1912 was posted to the permanent forces. He was then stationed at Waipukurau and on the outbreak of war joined the Wellington Mounted Rifles, leaving New Zealand; with the Main Body. He was bierposted to the Second Infantry Brigade; and went to Sling Camp. England, and l after taking ;< course of training there j returned to New Zealand and was sta-i tinned at Trentham Camp from 1917’ until the end «f the war. After thewar he took up duly in Wellington and I in 1925 was posted to Masierton as ai mounted ride instructor, and Sub-Area! N.C.0., taking charge -.t the Waira-j rapa and Bush districts, which position i he has held ever since.
