FIERCE GALE
GARDENS AND ORCHARDS SUFFER Much to the dismay of gardeners and orchardists. a fierce westerly gale late yesterday afternoon did considerable damage in Masterton and district. Fruit of all kinds suffered severely, the ground beneath the trees being littered with fallen fruit. .-X suggestion has been made that orchardists who cannot otherwise dispose of their windfalls should invite the children of the various Masterton orphanages to collect them. In Greytown, it is stated that as much as half a case full of fruit fell from each tree. Among garden plants, dahlias and gladioli fared badly and more than one grower saw the plants swept to the ground. In one instance a house window was blown in.
