SUNDAY SCREENING

FILM FOR PATRIOTIC FUNDS. COUNCIL GRANTS PERMISSION. "I am voting against it as a matter of principle," observed Councillor G. D. Wilson at 'last night's meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, referring to a proposal to allow the screening on a Sunday evening of a historic and educational film in aid of patriotic funds. “I find my position rather difficult.” said Councillor Wilson, “as I hesitate to oppose any scheme for raising funds for jxitriotic purposes. As some say. it is the thin edge of the wedge. I do not think it is good to introduce any Sunday entertainment at all. It is difficult to be consistent in this matter, I know." These observations arose following the reading of a letter from the National Patriotic Fund Board regarding the forthcoming screening of a film, in aid of patriotic funds depicting the history of New Zealand in its first hundred years. Permission was solight for a screening on a Sunday night at a reasonable charge to the public. The film was not to be shown for commercial purposes and it was hoped that it would be shown free of all cost, with the possible exception of advertising. The takings would be chedited to the local patriotic fund. Permission was granted provided the film was not shown before 8.15 o’clock.
