A short stretch of the Chapel : Street path at the rear of the Convent ■was re-graded after re-grading the . ikerb to the creek. A grass verge was J formed in Renall Street past the soldiers’ collages. The Park Lake intake was deepened and grass cut along the race. The kerbing of the new State housing cul-de-sac ‘Rue Block) is in hand, and will be completed this week. “Water and drainage: During the month two services were renewed. Services in Church Elizabeth. Makora Road and Third streets were repaired also valves in Second and Totara Streets and hydrant in Kirton Street. ! Repairs were carried out to 10-ineh i steel main in Pownall and Villa street i and to a 6-inch spiral steel main at ' Villa Street and Wrigley Street corners I and to 4-inch mains at Hospital enI trance and on second bridge. I “Building permits: During the month! ' three new permits were issued, having i an estimated value of £278. the fees | thereon amounting to £1 ss. For the ! corresponding month last year, two ' permits were issued, having an estima- ; ted value of £526. The comparative figures for the calendar year (January to December, 1940) are as follow: 1939. 72 permits (including 14 dwellings) to | estimated value of £26.563 12s; 1940. 61 | permits (including 10 dwellings) to es-1 timated value of £21.465. I am pleased to say ’ more adults are interested in swimming than in other seasons, So far I have taught 30 children to swim and have commenced issuing certificates for beginners, learners, proficiency and merit. Twenty-one school girls were successful in passing their elementary, intermediate, bronze, bar to brotize 2nd class instructor's. Two took their Ist class instructor’s in royal life-sav-ing. Cemetery Report. ] The monthly report in reference to •the Masterton Cemetery presented by the acting sexton. Mr J.
