ACTIVITIES of past month COUNCIL MEETING. ! IMPROVEMENTS TO STREETS. ' ' Reports on various phases of borough : activity were presented to the Masteri ton Borough Council.ai its meeting last J night. The Borough Engineer. Mr C. ! R. Mabson. reporting on work carried i cut in December, said: 1 •'Streets: The following tar-sealing i work has been carried out during the i month: —Paths, Cornwall Street, both sides. Chapel Street to Pownall Street: 1 Archer Street, west side. Church Street I to Cemetery: Olive Street, both sides ’ Lincoln Road to Perry Street. Flanks: Bentley Street. both sides, Lincoln f Road to Perry Street; The Terrace. - west side King Edward Street to Ter- • race End; Cornwall Street, both sides. . Chapel Street to Pownall Street; Renall Street, east side. Ngaumutawa to i Borough Boundary; South Road, west . side. Short Street to Millard Avenue; , i Miriam Street, both sides. Worksop . ‘ Road to Bannister Street: Hessey i Street, both sides. Worksop Road to Bannister Street; Kirton Street, both ' sides. Worksop Road to Bannister ( ; Street. A short stretch of the Chapel : Street path at the rear of the Convent ■was re-graded after re-grading the . ikerb to the creek. A grass verge was J formed in Renall Street past the soldiers’ collages. The Park Lake intake was deepened and grass cut along the race. The kerbing of the new State housing cul-de-sac ‘Rue Block) is in hand, and will be completed this week. “Water and drainage: During the month two services were renewed. Services in Church Elizabeth. Makora Road and Third streets were repaired also valves in Second and Totara Streets and hydrant in Kirton Street. ! Repairs were carried out to 10-ineh i steel main in Pownall and Villa street i and to a 6-inch spiral steel main at ' Villa Street and Wrigley Street corners I and to 4-inch mains at Hospital enI trance and on second bridge. I “Building permits: During the month! ' three new permits were issued, having i an estimated value of £278. the fees | thereon amounting to £1 ss. For the ! corresponding month last year, two ' permits were issued, having an estima- ; ted value of £526. The comparative figures for the calendar year (January to December, 1940) are as follow: 1939. 72 permits (including 14 dwellings) to | estimated value of £26.563 12s; 1940. 61 | permits (including 10 dwellings) to es-1 timated value of £21.465. These figures| d<» not include dwellings built by the! i State Housing Department. Borough Inspector. Mr J. McGregor, acting Borough In-1 spector, reports: ' “It gives me pleasure to report that! no case of infectious disease was noli-1 tied during December or to date this! month. Twenty-two plumbing and; I drainage permits were issued and the | j usual testing and inspection work car-j ried out. The following requisitions; ; were served: plumbing and drainage re-' i pairs 10; cut back shrubs 8; clear noxif ous weeds 14; remove rubbish 4; clear j creeks 3. Exira rubbish was removed ; from 20 premises. One ice cream i licence has been granted. Householders i are requested to keep their rubbish ■ tins clean and covered to prevent fly breeding in decaying remnants of refuse. Twenty-seven applicants for drivers' licences underwent the test required by regulation three failing to come up to standard. Heavy traffic| >fees for the month amounted to £GO6i ißs (Id. Two persons were prosecuted i for breaches of the regulations. The} •closing of Queen Street to motor trafficj ■ on the late night at Christmas and Newi | Year was given effect to. I Gas Manager's Renert. The Gas Manager Mr .J. V. Douglas, reported inter alia: "Gas manufacture 'cd: Total gas made corrected N.T.P. was 3.395.400 cubic feet. The Christmas and New Year ■ killings were disposed of very well, and without any casual labour. The plant is in good order and no time has been lost during the month through ' I breakages. ' The stock slaughtered was: —Cows. ' 53; heifers, 37; bullocks. 40; calves. 6: ’ ewes. 192; wethers. 375; lambs. 394; pigs. 155. Killing fees wore £166 10s ]‘ 2d lower than those for December. ] 1939. and to date they were £556 3s 9d . lower than those for the correspond- : ing period of last year, C. and A. Baths. Mrs Brenkley. custodian of the C. and A. Baths, reported;—“At present the clean baths and clear water are very pleasing to use and the high praise from visiting spectators shows every satisfaction. I am pleased to say ’ more adults are interested in swimming than in other seasons, So far I have taught 30 children to swim and have commenced issuing certificates for beginners, learners, proficiency and merit. Twenty-one school girls were successful in passing their elementary, intermediate, bronze, bar to brotize 2nd class instructor's. Two took their Ist class instructor’s in royal life-sav-ing. Cemetery Report. ] The monthly report in reference to •the Masterton Cemetery presented by the acting sexton. Mr J. Catherall. staled:—Lawn mowing and path clean-j ing have been the principal work for j the month. Interments for December j were: Adults. 11: children. 1; stillborn. ' 1; total. 13. The borough librarian, Mrs A.! | Cohen, reported: —Books issued, iic-i I tion. 5731; non-fiction and reference. I .621; total. 6352. Books added: Fiction. ■ 49: non-fiction and reference, 10; total. 59. Subscribers at beginying of month 609, new subscribers during month. 4: subscribers left during month. 6: total number at end of month. 607.
