HAPPY PARTNERSHIP
BETWEEN TWO RACES IN HONG KONG CENTENNIAL OF BRITISH OCCUPATION. RECORD OF ACHIEVEMENT. (British Official Wireless. > RUGBY". January 26. The proclamation of British sovereignty over Hong Kong proved a conclusive factor in the relations between the Western and Far Eastern worlds. The Parliamentary I'nder-Seeretary for the Colonies, Air G. H. Hall, emphasised this in a broadcast today in connection with the present centennial of the British occiipation.
"The achievement has not been the work of the British race alone." he said. "Hong Kong is essentially a clearing house for the trade and industry of South China. The Chinese of Hong Kong, while preserving the traditional sterling qualities of their race, have entered fully with zest into the life of this British colony. They have taken their place among the leaders of its political and industrial life, and
to them in particular Hong Kong owes the development of the many industries which have been set up. the products of which have been exported all over the world.
"Chinese members sit in the Legislative and Executive Councils. The Chinese population, too, has served and is serving with the other sections of the A.R.P. organisations set up for the defence of the colony.” , Regarding the future. Mr Hall said: "We can feel sure and confident that we will see the co-operation which has brought about such splendid achievements continuing to bear fruit, carrying us safely through the trials of war and assisting us to solve the problems which must be faced when victory is won. Great as the achievements of the past have beep, the opening of this second century of the happy partnership promises a period of even greater progress and service to the Empire."
