MEETING OF COUNCIL BUSINESS TRANSACTED LAST NIGHT. The Fire Brigade submitted the bal-ance-sheet in connection with a dance held on New Year’s Eve in aid of local patriotic funds. A credit balance of £d 9s 6d was disclosed. —It was decided that the Brigade be thanked by letter for its fine effort.
A. circular letter was read from the Wellington Provinciad Patriotic Council in regard to the collection of nonferrous metals waste paper, etc. It was decided to circularise residents to the effect that any such metal and paper would be collected during the clean-up week in March. The Tararua Power Board was granted permission to erect an incinerator for the disposal of rubbish, subject to it being approved of by the Building Inspector.
"What are we to do with them." said the Mayor referring to a list of some 40 residents, who. despite a final notice. had failed to clear their properties of noxious weeds. He went on to say that for years the Council had sidestepped the issue and had failed to. prosecute offenders. It was useless having a noxious weeds inspector unless some attention was given to his reports. — It was agreed that offending residents be circularised to the effect thru unless their properties were cleared within seven days, a prosecution would follow.
The Town Clerk reported that a complaint had been made to him concerning two local youths who had been noticed using the swing bridge in a manner that tended to have a damaging effect on the structure. After discussion. during which it was mentioned that several boards were loose on the bridge, it was decided to have the bridge inspected and put in a safe condition. Notices to the effect, that persons found damaging the bridge would be prosecuted, are to be placed at both oids of the bridge. The Town Clerk reported that to date 44 borough residents had enrolled for the Home Guard or E.P.S. The country’s total was 90.
The Foreman's report for December, which was adopted, stated inter alia: — The policy of salvaging all materials from repair work is being pursued, all lengths of old water-piping being returned to the depot, for future use in culverts and the like. The sumps at present are in excellent condition, The fall of the river will be watched to ensure that the level does not fall below the intake. Very little has been done on cither the metalled or sealed sections during the month. These are in fair order at present. The sealed section near Tyler's Bridge is wearing very well, and only requires a small amount of patching to keep it up-
