4. DECLARED BY MARSHAL PETAIN COUNTRY FACING CRUEL WINTER. I POSITION OF COLONIES. <By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright, NEW YORK, January 18. In a copyright message to the North American Newspaper Alliance from Vichy. Mr. Jay Allen states that he had; the first exclusive interview with the’ French Chief of State. Marshal Petain, who said there was no one who could say authoritatively what resistance from the colonies might have been worth, but it could be proved that resistance would have been paid for very dearly by the invasion of all France* and a complete break between the j Motherland and the Empire.
Marshal Petain said: "We find today that, having stood the trial, France has survived. The national revolution of 1940 aims to restore community discipline. to restore quality in labour and greater family life. However, there will be empty cradles because 2,000,000 Frenchmen are in prison camps. We face a cruel winter and thus the prospect of cradles with sick babies alongside empty cradles." Marshal Petain addressed an urgent appeal to America for food supplies.
