It is announced from Vichy that ns a reprisal for these attacks, two Thailand villages have been bombed by French machines. MARTIAL LAW PROCLAIMED IN THAI PROVINCES. PENETRATION OF 20 MILES INTO INDO-CHINA. LONDON. January 9. Martial law has been proclaimed in 24 provinces of Thailand, bordering French Indo-China, states a message from Bangkok, Thai forces are reported to have penetrated Cambodia in three places. A later message from Shanghai states that Thai troops, supported by the air force, have penetrated 20 miles within Indo-China territory, advancing in the direction of the Angkor ruins.

The Thailand forces, driving deep into Cambodia, forced the French to retreat “far behind their old positions,” which the Thais occupied. However they have not yet reached Sisophon. A communique said: "Ninety Thai planes heavily bombed Sisophon and live other towns, entirely setting tire to Sisophon. All the Thai planes returned."

The communique added that artillery fire was raging throughout ‘die Nongkai, Nakornphanom and Mukdaharn sectors, setting fire to an oil dump and exploding a munitions dump.
