Messrs. R. O. Shaw, A. Miller and L. Munn left Masterton today to begin territorial training at Waiouru. The Hon W. Lee Martin. Minister of Agriculture, will visit Cambridge tomorrow, Raglan on Monday and iiunily on Tuesdnv.
According to a Gazette notice issued last night, Major J. 11. Irving. El), (of Masterton), 29th Infantry (Mixed) Battalion, remains seconded while performing the duties of brigade major.
Tito death has occurred of Mr Alfred Boon, aged 72, superintendent of the New Plymouth Fire Brigade. Born at Dome Va lley, Wark worth, he arrived at Now Plymouth in the latter part of last century to take a notable place in the business life of the town. In 1895 he started in the building trade and the firm continues today of which he was the managing director. Mr Boon joined the fire brigade in 1897, and became superintendent in 1923. Twenty years ago he won awards at the New Zealand championships. In 1933 he was elected president of the United Fire Brigades Association.

Mr i Macmillan was born nt St Croix, in ; the West Indies, and was the younger ; son of Captain Macmillan, a commnndj er in the British Navy, and Mrs Mac- | millan, who was a daughter of Baron ;de la Barca. He was educated at a ■ boarding school in England and aftcr- ! ward privately in New Zealand As : a result of heavy losses through negro I insurrection at St Croix in 1879, his I father, who at that time was a sugar I planter, decided to come to New Zea- ; land. Upon arrival in 1881 ho settled l at Katikati. In 1923. as a Reform oan- ; didate, Mr Macmillan defeated Sir I Joseph Ward by a by ■election caused ! by the death of Sir William Berries ! , In 1932 he was appointed Minister of ■ Agriculture and Mines. He was de- ; feated at the 1935 election by the : Labour candidate, Mr C H. Burnett. , He was mayor <>f Tauranga front 1915! to 1917.
