Hughes) announced today that the Commonwealth Government had closed four commercial radio stations last night because it is believed that under cover of harmless broadcasts information calculated to help the enemy and endanger Australian interests was being broadcast.

The stations which include Jehovah’s Witness sessions in their programmes are 2HD Newcastle, 4AT Atherton (Queensland). SKA. Adelaide, and SAU Pori .Augusta. The Postmaster-General (Senator McLeay) said the action against the stations followed a thorough investigation at ’.i-.e instance of ’ one of the fighting services.” He was' unable to give any more information. On Monday Gordan Edwards, a 2HD announcer and a Jehovah's Witness, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment tor refusing to take the oath under the compulsory military training regulations.
