Butchers uro demanding measures to prevent angry queues from forming outside their .-’hops as was the case this weekend, when thousands of people were not merely short of meat but entirely without any. The Federation of Meat Traders is urging that tb.e value of the ration be reduced in proportion to the actual meat available. One trader expressed the opinion that the ration should immediately be reduced to Is 3d a week. The Food Minister (Lord Woolton) said the position of the meat supplies was admittedly difficult and indicated that little relief can be expected for a fortnight. He said: “If wo find wo cannot live up to a Is 6d ration we shall reduce it. but. during what I believe to be a temporary meat shortage, I do not want to deprive the public of any more than is necessarv.”
