CUTTING DRY GRASS

REMOVAL GF FIRE HAZARD. POSITION IN THE BOROUGH. "The public’s response to • the brigade s appeal to cut dry grass in the ■vicinity ot buildings in the borough has been pretty good.” observed Mr T. B. Clark, superintendent of the Masterton Fire Brigade this morning. "Quite a number of sections have had the grass removed and in others the grass is at present being cut but there are some people who do not seem to understand the position." Mr Clark added. The superintendent went on to state that the brigade was doing everything it could to remove the danger of Are and during the past week or two its officers had been very busy attending to this work. There were still areas on which the grass needed cutting and some people were experincing difficulty in getting labour to carry out the work. Many of the sections concerned were owned by the Stnw and representations were being made to the Government to have the grass cut. He was pleased with the co-operation which ho had received from many property-owners and occupiers. Yesterday the brigade was called out to a fire which had spread into a paddock rear the railway Uno. The brigade's services were not necessary, as a railway gang which is at present burning off along the line was quite capable of attending to it. Occasionally dense clouds of smoke could be secrx, yesterday arising from the railway line area but this came from the g mt.'s operations along the line.
