Captain W. N. Masefield, the Marlborough rifleman, who has won the King's Prize for shooting, has been granted the temporary rank of major. He is a member of the Nelson, Marlborough and Wes! Coast Mounted Rifle Regiment. At the New Zealand Esperanto Congress at Wanganui the election of officers resulted: —President. Mr Bertram Potts (Wellington); vice-presidents, Messrs E. A. Watkin (Wanganui), W. King (Masterton). W, L. Edmundson (Wellington’', and .D. Tilly iWhatigareil; general secretary, Mr L. Kirk; members secretary, Mrs D. Kirk; treasurer, Miss I. F, Shrimpton.

Sergeant-Major K. Bishop. Hamilton. who has served with the New Zealand Army for nearly 30 years, has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant. and has been appointed adjutant of the Waikato Mounted Rifles. Lieutenant Bishop served through the Great War. and on his return he joined the New Zealand Permanent Staff, with which he has since been associated.

A well known resident of the Pongaroa district died on Monda.v in the person of Mr Alexander McDonald, aged 77. The late Mr McDonald, who was a son of the late Mr and Mrs J. McDonald, was born at New Plymouth. As a young man lie engaged in farming at Woodville and married Miss Harriet Hill, of Woodville. For some years the late Mr McDonald conducted a butchery business in that town. Since 1504 Mr McDonald had lived at Pongaroa. He took an active part in the affairs of the district, serving on the School Committee and also as the representative of the Akitio County Council on the Wairarapa Hospital Board for several years. He leaves three sons. Messrs Douglas, Bruce and. Wallace McDonald, and two daughters, j Misses Ruby and Myrtle McDonald, all; of Pongaroa. Mrs McDonald died; some years ago.
