BOWLING CLUB COMPETITION GAMES. (“Times-Age” Special.) A game in the Carterton Bowling Club’s progressive pairs was played last evening when Hawker and Whyte (s) defeated E. Clark and Riggs (s) 25/8. The holders of the DeLacey Buttons. Kilmister and Newbould (s), after a good game were defeated by the challengers, Riggs and Harrington, by 22/18. \ ORDER OF DRUIDS MEETING OF TOTARA LODGE. The last meeting of the year of the Totara Lodge of Druids was held in the lodge room last evening, Bro. W. Fryer, A.D., presiding over a good attendance of members. Business mostly of a routine character was transacted. A vote of condolence to. the family and relatives of the late Bro. Jas. Hannah was passed in silence. Reports concerning sick visitors were received. It was stated that all members were progressing satisfactorily. P.A. Bro. A. Stretton, who is an inmate of Croydon hospital, was reported as improving in health. Sick pay amounting to £42 Is. 4d., including Social Security sick pay, was passed for payment. Bro. L. C Meyrick, of Kaikohe, was a visitor and was accorded a hearty welcome. ' Meat Works Busy. Sheep and lambs in large numbers are being conveyed to the Waingawa freezing works from all parts of the valley and from East Coast. The works are consequently busy in all departments. Australian Wheat. A fairly large consignment of Australian wheat has arrived at the Carterton railway station and is being conveyed to the Carterton Flour Mills. Cheese Consignment. The cheese factories in and around Carterton are sending large consignments of cheese to cool stores at Wellington. So far this season the production of the various factories is well ahead of last year. The farmers of the district are certainly doing their best in connection with the war effort. bNew Year’s Eve Traffic. otor traffic tonight will be prohid between Pembroke Street and Belvedere Street. The streets will be patrolled by two officers and the Traffic Inspector. It is hoped that the letting off of crackers will be prohibited in the streets. In this connection the danger from fire is a serious matter as the grass in the vicinity of the town is very dry. Heavy Traffic on Railways. Traffic on the railways both by rail- , car and steam train after the New Year holidays will be taxed to the utmost. Upon enquiry locally it was ascertained that seats on all railcars had been booked for Monday and Tuesday. Some travellers have been unable to get railcar accommodation for Monday and will require to wait till Tuesday. Hot Weather. Yesterday was another hot day in Carterton. At 3 p.m. the thermometer registered over 88 degrees in the shade. Towards night a change took place and the wind swung round to the south. Personal Items. Mr Pat Smith, of the P. and T. Department, Napier, is spending his leave ■with his mother in Carterton. . Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Meyrick, of Kaikohe, are on a visit to Carterton, and are staying with Mrs. Taucher, Belvedere Street. Mr. Garrett, of Hamilton, is a visitor to Carterton, and is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Harp.
