WOMAN KILLED
MOTOR CARS COLLIDE. / TRAGEDY AT WAIKANAE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A woman was killed and a man was severely injured in a motor car accident which occurred on Saturday morning at the intersection in Waikanae of the Akatarawa Road with the main highway. The woman, who died shortly after from severe head injuries, was Mrs Jean Smith. Palmerston North, and the injured man was her husband, Mr Kenneth Smith, c/o Smith and Alley, George Street, Palmerston North. He received a broken left collarbone and other severe injuries. His condition was reported to be not serious. It is stated that Mr and Mrs Smith were married only a few days ago. The accident occurred when Mr Smith, who was travelling north behind a large Railways Department road motor service bus, turned his car to enter the Akatarawa Road and came into collision with a service car going south. Dr D. 0. Patersonr. Paraparaumu, was called and had Mrs Smith conveyed to a nearby house, where she died. Mr Smith was taken to Palmerston North Hospital. The driver of the service car was unhurt. Both cars were damaged and had to be towed away.
An inquest on Mrs Smith was opened before Mr G. H. Harper, J.P., Otaki. on Saturday afternoon, and after formal evidence of identification, was adjourned sine die.
