WAIRARAPA V. HAWKE’S BAV SENIOR AND JUNIOR GAMES. * A HOLIDAY SPIRIT. There was a holiday spirit in evidence at the Masterton Park yesterday afternoon, when the senior and junior games between Wairarapa and Hawke’s Bay teams were continued. The weather was fine l , and there was a large attendance of spectators, drawn there by the weather conditions, and the prospect of seeing some good play. SENIOR GAME. AN INTERESTING STAGE. Hawke’s Bay completed its first innings for 233, after making a poor start, 6 wickets being down at one stage for' 110. However, Begley, Mahoney and Wilcox saved the position. Begley’s splendid 60 included thirteen 4’s. and Mahoney’s 51 not out six boundaries. Stevens bowled best for Wairarapa, taking four wickets for 59. Wairarapa held the wickets for the rest of the afternoon; Munn and Lambourne opened, , but at 24 Lambourne was caught. Munn and W. Whiteman followed shortly after, with the score at 3 for 29. The association of Tier and W. Peterson was beneficial to the local team. Both scored freely, Peterson getting some nice shots away. The paitneiship was not dissolved until 83 was on the board, when Tier was bowled aftei having compiled 27 by good batting. He hit four boundaries. Then followed a solid partnership between the two Red Star representatives, N. Hoar and W. Peterson. Playing the bowling with confidence, and scoring freely all round the wicket, they carried the score to 168, when Peterson was caught after a faultless 73, though he cocked two or three balls upwards, but out of reach of fieldsmen. He notched a 6 and eleven 4’s. When he had scored 69 play was held up for a time on an appeal that one bail had been disturbed when a ball apparently hit the wicket. As the vision of the umpires was obscured at the moment by players, the' batsman was given the benefit of the doubt. Wilson did not last long, but Hoar and Greer played out time, both scoring freely all round the wicket. Hoar gave a chanceless display of pretty batting for 48 not out, which included a six and six 4’s. Greer laid the wood on freely, his 25 including five 4’s and a 2. The Hawke’s Bay team was one player short, so A. Hoar- (Wairarapa emergency) filled the gap. Scores: — . HAWKE’S BAY. First Innings. R. Mitchell, b Hibbs 20 Hawthorne, b A. Whiteman 34 J.
