CHRISTMAS SHOPPING BRISK BUSINESS REPORTED. (“Times-Age” Special.) Christmas Eve was ushered in with heavy drenching rain and cold conditions but despite this drawback the streets were crowded. Although it was raining this did not discourage the young people to suitably celebrate the occasion. The Wairarapa Pipe Band enlivened proceedings by playing much appreciated airs in various parts t of the town. The Christmas spirit preV vailed throughout the day and night, and all seemed to be content to spend money and secure as much enjoyment as possible out of the occasion. WAIOHINE RIVER FLOODED CONDITIONS. For the second, time in the course ol a little over a week the Waiohine River, backed up by the Maungaterere stream, overflowed its banks as a result of heavy rain in the hills. Settlers in Swamp Road state that Tuesday’s flood was the heaviest experienced at Christmas time for many years. Residents of Swamp Road who came to Carterton. were compelled to return to their homes by way of Dalefield and Matarawa. the water being too deep to ford on the main road. BOY SCOUTS CHRISTMAS CAVE. The Boy Scout Christmas cave which was brought to a conclusion on Christmas Eve proved very successful. Throughout the day and evening on Tuesday a steady stream of visitors visited the cave. The Scout Committee consider the effort satisfactory SERVICE OF PRAYER AT THE ANGLICAN CHURCH. There was a very representative congregation present at an intercession service held in St. Mark’s Church, last evening. Special Christmas hymns were read by the Rev. J. A. Daglish (Methodist Church) and the Rev. VI. J. Couling (St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church) preached an interesting sermon, taking for his text “Peace on Earth, Goodwill Toward Men.” In the course of his remarks he said that there would be no actual peace on earth until all the peoples of the nations of the world put God first in their lives, and not until then would there be perfect peace.. Prayers were offered by Mr S. T. Rooney, lay-reader of St. Mark’s Church. The Rev. W. F. Stent opened the service and closed it by pronouncing the Benediction.
BOWLING CARTERTON CLUB GAMES. Further games in the Carterton Club's championship competitions have been played as under: — Champion singles: F. Harrington beat Hughan, 20/14; Barber beat Stent, 20/17. Champion pairs: Smith arid Underhill (s) beat Daysh and Newbould (s), 22/18; Larsen and Barber (s) beat Harris and Simmonds (s), 18/17. Personal. Mr Rupert Lorenzen and his sister are visitors to Carterton for the holidays. They are staying with their mother, who resides in Seddon Street. Among the members of the military force on leave during the holidays are Sappers M. Meyer and W. P. Meyer, Privates D. Smith, C. Teal and Rex Lawrence.
