GREYTOWN

BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITIONS. ("Times-Age" Special.) In the championship singles competition of the Greytown Bowling Club Kilgour beat Nightingale, Carter beat Brunton, Bockett beat Peterson. Flaying for the Dennes Medal Campbell beat Skeet on the last head by one. Two games for the Gold Bars were played at the weekend. The holders, Messrs Dennes and McLeod, had a comfortable win over Brunton and Kilgour. In the other game Shedden and Higgison made things' hard from the start scoring the first five heads. Both leads played good bowls and the skips resorted to driving to open up the heads. On the 17th head the score was 17/18 in favour of the challengers but the holders scored on the next four heads winning 23/18.

RETURNED SOLDIERS CHRISTMAS PARTY. The Greytown branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association held a Christmas party in the Odd Fellows’ Hall on Saturday evening. Mr S. Shedden, assisted by the president, Mr J. W. Herod, and members of the Committee, conducted games for both the children and the “Diggers.” The competition, balancing a book on the head, was won by Jim Wilson Junr. In the soldiers’ section Mr J. Barr won. He carried out every order given even dancing the Highland Fling without displacing the book from his head. After supper Father Christmas arrived and all the young children present received a gift. Music for the dancing was played by Miss B. Hawke, Mesdames Beu and Carter and Mi- F. Dewhurst. CROQUET HORTON BUTTONS. Playing for the Horton Buttons Mesdames Stevens and Carter defeated Mesdames Brunton and Ward.

CHURCH PARADE ATTENDED BY FREEMASONS. The members of the Greytown Masonic Lodge paraded at the service at the Greytown Presbyterian Church last evening. The Rev H. Bloomfield conducted the service and the Rev G. Knowles Smith preached 'the sermon. Mrs T. G. R. Ingley sang the solo, “Day By Day.” Miss Elsie Gregor presided at the organ. SWIMMING CLUB CARNIVAL EVENTS. The following are the events for the carnival tonight:—loyds learners, 25yds junior girls, 25yds junior boys, 50yds intermediate girls, 50yds intermediate boys, 50yds senior men, 50yds senior ladies, 25yds open backstroke, dive and teams race. It is expected that the events will be keenly contested. LABOUR PARTY SUCCESSFUL DANCE. A dance organised by the officials of the local branch of the Labour Party was held in the Odd Fellows’ Hall on Friday night. The proceeds are to be donated to the Buchanan Home fund. The function was a success and, mainly owing to the sale of tickets and a cake competition which was drawn during the evening, over £lO will be handed over to the matron of the Home. The winner of the cake competition was J. Todd, of the Buchanan Home. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Sister Hughes and her partner, and a lucky spot waltz by Miss M. Rhodes and her partner. Supper was served, after which Mr Ben Roberts thanked those who had conti ibuted to the success of the effort. Mr Maloney made a capable M.C.

NURSES’ PARTY AT GREYTOWN HOSPITAL. A delightful Christmas party was held at the Greytown Hospital last Thursday evening among the nursing staff. The Christmas tree was a feature of the gathering. Each nurse had contributed to a gift for the tree, and each one received a present which was attached to the end of a string. There was much gaiety as nurses went dressed in fancy costume. Sister Hughes, dressed as a parson won tne j first prize, and Nurse Lammas - as a 19th century lady was second. Matron Higginson received the wandering mystery parcel. A competition was won by Sistei Major. The most original costume was won by Nurse Cane, who was dressed as "The National £1,000,000 Appeal. A community sing was held. The 'sweets and cigarettes weie gi ven by Mrs Rex Brunton. The party was voted one oi the best yet held at the Nurses Home. SUNDAY SCHOOL PUPILS ENTERTAINED BY TEACHERS. The Anglican Sunday School pupils were entertained at tea in the Pai is i Hall on Friday evening by the Sunday School teachers and Canon and Mrs Sykes. Father Christmas made his appearance after tea and handed prizes to the junior and kindergarten

pupils. Canon and Mrs Sykes handed prizes to senior boys and girls. Special mission prizes were received by Misses Mary Carter, Effie Dennes, June Burns, Muriel Pope, and Masters France Skect, lan Trotman, Dudley Richards, Warren Trotman and Kelvin Brine. A special prize foi’ the care of the church brass work went to Joyce Robinson. All teachers were the recipients of small gifts. Canon Sykes thanked the teachers for their co-operation and interest during the year. The gathering closed wit', the singing of “God Save the King" and the pronouncing of the Benediction. Euchre Party. The South Wairarapa Working Men’s Club will hold its Christmas euchre party on Saturday next.
