EKETAHUNA

DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL MEETING OF COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna District High School Committee the chairman, Mr H. E. Greathead, presided over a full attendance of members. Accounts amounting to £l3 0s 9d were passed for payment. The matter of the issue of quarterly term reports was discussed, members being of the unanimous opinion that the practice should be continued. The headmaster (Mr A. B. Fordyce) reported that the arrangements for the children’s fancy dress dance were well in hand. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Messrs H. Higginson and ,R. Farrow for their action in having the school sheep shorn. The headmaster reported that 159 pupils were attending the Primary department and 40 were attending the Secondary department. Since November 1 nine new pupils had been enrolled. The inspectors visited the school on December 4 and 5. It was decided that no meeting be held in January, and that the chairman and secretary be authorised to deal with any minor matters which may arise. The meeting concluded with the chairman extending seasonal greetings to the members.

AGRICULTURAL CLUB COMPETITION RESULTS. The following is the result of the competition conducted by the Eketahuna group of the Tararua Boys and Girls’ Agricultural Club: L. Gardiner 1, P. Walker 2. The competition for the best kept records in the Tararua Boys and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs was won by the Rongokokako School. OBITUARY MRS E. WATTS. There died at the Pahiatua Public Hospital on Friday Mrs Evelyn Watts (Eva), wife of Mr Walter Watts, of Eketahuna. Born and educated in Nelson, the deceased was the second daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Carrington Gapper, of Richmond, Nelson, and grand-daughter of the late Mr 1 Bernard Gapper, one of Nelson's early English pioneers, who was present at the Wairau Massacre under Captain Wakefield and who had been sent from England to form the Nelson settlement. Of a retiring disposition, and a teacher in her early life, she retained a keen interest in education, music, and art. She was a past president of the Eketahuna Croquet Club. Besides her husband, one son, Mr Campbell Watts (G.P.0., Wellington) and one daughter (Miss Trixie Watts, of Eketahuna) are left to mourn their loss, as well as two sisters (Mrs J. D. Proffitt of Taranaki, and Mrs R. C. Groves of Feeding). Her only surviving brother is Mr Bernard Gapper, a retired schoolmaster of Nelson. Many beautiful floral tributes and messages of sympathy were received from all parts of New Zealand.i Relatives who attended the funeral were Mr and Mrs R. C. Groves, Feilding, Mr and Mrs Theo Foreman, Master Gerald Foreman of Alton, Taranaki, Mr Campbell Watts, Wellington, Mr and Mrs Harold Watts, Palmerston North, and Mr and Mrs W. Watts, Pahiatua. Floral tributes were sent by the staff of G.P.0., Wellington, the staff of Mr A. H. Herbert, Mr and Mrs A. H. Herbert, a token of remembrance tied with the croquet colours from the president of the Eketahuna Croquet. Club. Two nephews are Private J. Proffitt and Corporal George Gapper, Medical Corps. Sister Margery Proffitt of the 3rd Echelon, is a niece of the deceased. Personal Items. Miss M. Chambers, Carterton, was the guest of Miss M. Hooper for the weekend. Mr and Mrs Colin Frederickson, j Dannevirke, are the guests of Mr and i Mrs A. Frederickson, Anderson Street.
