GIANT LILY

SPLENDID SPECIMEN GROWN. A splendid example of lilium giganteum. a native of the Himalaya Mountains. is in bloom in the garden of Mrs M. G. Scharnweber, at Akura. This giant lily, which reaches a height of from 10 to 12 feet, bears on a single stem 10 to 20 tubular white flowers, which are very fragrant. The leaves are broad and massive and after flowering the foliage dies and the new bulbs formed will not bloom for another three years. The flower spike ,in Mrs Scharnweber’s garden is between 7 and 8 feet high. The plant grows in a sunny position, which strange to say is the opposite position it favours in its native haunts.
