WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MATARAWA-DALEFIELD MEETING. ENJOYABLE MUSICAL . PROGRAMME. (“Times-Ttge” Special.) The December meeting of the Mata-rawa-Dalefield Women’s Institute was I held in the Dalefield Hall, Mrs L. RogI ers presiding over a large attendance of members and visitors. The meeting opened with the singing of “God Defend New Zealand” followed by the “Ode to Friendship,” the Aspiration and Prayer for Peace. Arrangements were made to hold the 1 children’s Christmas party on Saturday. A letter was received from the A.N.A. Club, Wellington, thanking 'the institute for the hamper that had been forwarded for the soldiers' teas. The secretary (Miss J. Knowles) announced that the hamper had contained 20 sultana cakes and approximately 8 dozen biscuits. A letter of thanks was also received from Private Broughton (England) who had received one of the parcels forwarded to local soldiers several months ago. It was decided to forward further parcels similar to those previously sent. The purchasing of these was left to Mesdames R. Callister, A. Goodin and W. Knowles.

During the afternoon items were given by the Drama Circle as follows: — Christmas carols, “Carol Sweetly Carol” and “Once in Royal David City;" a play entitled “Tit Bits for Tom,” Mrs Callister and Miss Beth Knowles; songs by Mrs Rofe, Mrs Callister and Mrs R. Gallon; recitation, “Aunt Lizzie Loses her Andbag,” Mrs G. Knowles; a sketch. “An ’lnstitute Meeting,” and a nigger minstrel show by members of the Circle. Large entries were received in the monthly competitions, the results being as follows: —Three best blooms, seniors, Mrs L, Rogers, 1; Mrs R. Gallon, 2; Mrs R. Callister, 3. Junior, Miss I. Zillwood, 1; B. Sadler, 2; J. Goodin, 3. Christmas novelty, senior, Mrs R. Gallon, 1; Mrs McCarty, 2; Mrs O. Brazendale and Mrs W, Nielsen (equal), 3. Junior, Miss Jean Conwell, 1; Miss I. Zillwood, 2; Miss J. Goodin, 3. Votes of thanks were passed to the judges, Mrs Tankersley and Mrs J. McKenzie (flowers), and Mrs W. Steven and Mrs A. Knutson (Christmas novelty), and each was presented with a dainty shoulder spray. The president and secretary extended the compliments of the season to members and friends, after which the singing of the National Anthem brought a very happy gathering to a close.
