ART CLUB

FORMED IN MASTERTON

interests widened. SCOPE FOR CRAFT WORK. At a well attended meeting in Masterton last night it was unanimously decided to form a Masterton Art Club. Dr. Archer Hosking presided over a gallery' which was representative of the Masterton Sketch Club and the general public. Several apologies for absence were received. In surveying the past activities of the Sketch Club Dr. Hosking observed that wonderful work had been achieved. The club had plodded along as a Sketch Club but It was now desired to extend its activities. Mrs Murray Fuller offered many suggestions for the widening of the scope of the club’s interests.' She congratulated the club on its room, and considered that craft works (carving and clay modelling) should be included in the club’s activities.

“There is a sad lack of knowledge of the history of art,” said Mrs Fuller. Few knew of the leading, artists of today, she added, in urging the use of good books and a better knowledge of the great masters. She considered that great benefit would be derived by having the club's work criticised regularly and if the members were To work under supervision. The club was fortunate in having the services of Mr S. B. Maclennan, arts master at Wairarapa College. Mrs Fuller pointed out the danger of the club becoming “a mutual admiration society.” Mr L. T. Daniell stressed the valuable work which was being carried out by the Maoris of the district. He considered much benefit would be derived from a study of the natives’ work. He emphasised the necessity of the club having its own rooms and defining a policy for the future. Mr S. B. Maclennan, convenor of the meeting, spoke briefly, outlining ’the programme which would be carried out.

The following officers were elected: —Patron, the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan; president, Mr A. E. Clemas; life members, Mrs Dalziell and Miss Maunsell; hon. secretary, Mr F. D. C. McPhee; hon. treasurer, Mr J. Whyte; committee, Mesdames F. C. Brockett, L. T. Daniell, Eric Shaw, Messrs F. Price, H. M. Smith and Fergusson. Supper was served at the conclusion of business.
