WOODVILLE MEETING

OLD BILL WINS BOLTON HANDICAP. VASCONES SALUTES JUDGE. (By ‘Telegraph—Press Association.) WOODVILLE, December 7. A fighting finish by Old Bill to win the Bolton Handicap, and an all-the-way success bj' Vascones in the open sprint, were features of the opening day of the Woodville District Jockey Club's summer meeting on Saturday. The weather was overcast with one of two light showers, but it was warm and conditions were good for racing. The track was in excellent order and provided perfect going. Favourites did not fare too well in straight-out betting, and there were two double figure dividends, by Ex Pupil and Colerica. The totalisator turnover for the day was £15,893 10s, compared with £15,910 on the corresponding day last year, when single pool betting was the system, a decrease of £l6 10s. This was mainly due to the small field in the open sprint, in which only five ran, two of them being bracketed. The Awapuni apprentice D. W. Redstone, rode two winners. Won All The Way. With a 51b allowance Vascones had an advantage over Kathbella of 351 b. and she made the most of it to lead all the way in the sprint at Woodville on Saturday. Kathbella was always handy in behind on the fence, but when she essayed to overhaul Vascones in the straight she was unable to do it. This pair finished well clear of Lambourn, who after drifting in the running made same impression in the run home. Sleeveless ran prominently for half a mile.
