BOWLING WALK ARAP A v. MANAWATU. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Wairarapa bowlers will' leave for Palmerston North tomorrow, where they will play their annual fixture against Manawatu Centre. The Carterton rinks 'will be: — Hawker. Newbould, Smith, Hughan (s); Geo. Steven, Underhill, DeLacey, Sorensen (s). At the weekend four rinks of Carterton bowlers will play a game against Eketahuna at Eketahuna. Church' Service. Church of England service will be held at Gladstone by the Rev. W. F. Stent on Sunday at 11 a.m. Personal Items. Mr J. Crawley, of Taylor Street, entered the"Masterton Hospital yesterday to undergo treatment for a poisoned arm. Last evening members of the South Wairarapa Pipe Band paid a surprise visit to Constable Robertson's residence and serenaded him and his wife and daughter on the eve of the retirement of Constable Robertson from thepolice force on superannuation. Mr Archie White, drum-major of the band, in a happy speech referred to the retirement of Constable Robertson and said that the members of the pipe band were sorry he was leaving Carterton. They had hoped he would have made his home in Carterton, after so long a service to the town and district. He assured the constable that he had made many very warm friends among them members of the pipe band. As a mark of their appreciation of his service to the police force and as a citizen he asked Constable Robertson to accept a well-filled Morocco tobacco wallet, accompanied by a card which bore the words: "To Mr Robertson with best wishes for a happy retirement, from the Wairarapa South Pipe Band. The 'Boys.” Constable Robertson returned his sincere thanks and appreciation for the gift and the sentiments expressed by Mr White. Members of the party provided an impromptu concert before leaving.
The death occurred at the Masterton Hospital yesterday of a very old and respected pioneer settler of Carterton in the person of Mr Collingwobd Goodin, in his 87th year. Deceased, who had been an inmate of the hospital for. several months, was a very old settler of Carterton and resided here when the town was surrounded by dense bush. He leaves a wid'dw and grown-up family. The funeral will take place at Clareville Cemetery tomorrow, leaving King's Mortuary Chapel, Broadway, at 1.30 p.m. Dance at Belvedere. The Belvedere School should be crowded tonight when a dance to provide funds for entertaining soldiers leaving the district will be held. The floor is in excellent order and good music will be supplied. Carrington Rainfall. Mr J. A. Roberts, of Carrington, reports that the rainfall for November was 4.08 inches, the heaviest fall (1.07 inches) occurred on the 12th. The total fall for the year up to date is 44.68 inches. This is considerably heavier than last year’s figures. There has been only two months since last January that the fall has been under 4 inches.
