OBITUARY
MR EDWARD JAMES COCKERILL. The death occurred yesterday of Mr Edward James Cockerill, of Upper Plain, Masterton, at the age of 93 years. The late Mr Cockerill had enjoyed remarkably good health throughout his life and in recent years had devoted his time and energies to gardening. Born in Tasmania, he came to New Zealand when he was 21 years of age and resided at Waikouaiti, near Dunedin, for a period before going to Palmerston South, where he was employed as a road foreman by the Waihemo County Council. In his younger days he was a prominent horseman. A few days after his arrival in this country he won on Lady Bird the first race for the Dunedin Cup, decided on the beach. In those days bullock 1 drays were used for grandstands. The late Mr Cockerill came to the Wairarapa twenty years ago and had resided at Upper Plain ever since. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs Goff (Wellington) and the Misses C. and L. Cockerill (Upper Plain). The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving the late residence, following a service to be held at 1 p.m., for the Masterton Cemetery.
