Mr W. Dobson’s resignation as secretary of -the Dannevirke Fire Board'was received this week at a special meeting of the board. Mr J. A. Nodwell was appointed his successor.

The death occurred yesterday at the Pahiatua Hospital of Mr Hakaraia Hurapera, late of Hastwells, at the age of 91 years. The funeral will leave his late residence at Hastwells at 2.30 p.m. tomorrow for the Hastwells Cemetery. Mr A. H. Carman, Tawa Flat, yesterday announced that he had officially resigned from the Democratic Labour Party, and from his position as national treasurer, to which he was reelected at the New Zealand conference at the Labour Day Weekend. Mr F. Temm had been appointed national treasurer in his stead. Mr George Christie, who met his death accidentally at Auckland last month, while doing duty for the Naval Department, was widely known as a commercial traveller for many years in both North and South Islands, representing British interests. He was born in Stirling, Scotland, and came to New Zealand 30 years ago. As a member of the first New Zealand Cycle Battalion, he saw service in the last war.

A presentation to the former Leader of the Opposition, Mr A. Hamilton, was made when certain members of the Opposition met him at Wellington at a supper party on Wednesday night. Mr Hamilton was presented with a piece of silver in recognition of his distinguished service to the country and the- National Party. The speakers included Mr Burnett, M.P. for Temuka, and Mr Forbes, M.P. for Hurunui. In reply, Mr Hamilton thanked those present for their loyalty and support. Settlers of the Rangitumau district assembled in the local hall the other night to entertain at a dance Private Cohn Duncan, a member of the Fourth Reinforcement. On behalf of those present Messrs. D. C. Stuart and W. F. McLaren presented Private Duncan with a wristlet watch and a well-filled wallet, while on behalf of the Masterton third grade football team, Mr. L. Wilton presented him with a cigarette case. Mr. Jack West played the music for the dancing, and the M.’sC. were Messrs L. Wilton and T. D. McLachlan. After a lingering illness in Lewisham Hospital, Sydney, Father Thomas Bernard Segrief, S.M., died there yesterday at the age of 56 years. He was born in Wellington and completed his studies for the priesthood at Greenmeadows, Hawke’s Bay. He will best be remembered in New Zealand as a chaplain through the last war.
