Mission For Men. 1 The Rev. Father Cheeseman, S.M., of Wellington, is at present conducting a Mission for men at St. Patrick’s Church, Masterton. The mission will be concluded on Sunday next. Drilling for Oil. The New Zealand Petroleum Company, Ltd., reports that the Morere oil bore has reached a depth of 5450 feet in hard shale and sandy shale. The Midhurst well has been advanced to 4530 feet in hard and sandy shale. Calling up of Farm Workers. At a meeting of the executive committee of the dVlanawatu Young Farmers’ Clubs the following remit was received from the Oroua Downs club. “That in view of the necessity of increasing production from farms, this club considers that farm workers should not be called to camp before April, 1941.” It was decided that no
action be taken. Dorset Horn Sheep Flock Sold. The oldest Dorset Horn flock in New Zealand, that belonging to Mr. C. C. Laver, Otamuri, Hawke’s Bay, has been sold to Mr. H. J. Kelliher. Auckland. The flock, which is No. 1 in the New Zealand Flock Book, was established five or six years ago by the direct importation from the well-known South Australian breeder, Mr. W. J. Dawkins, of 38 ewes and one ram. Demand For Silk Stockings. “Just send Mr Nash to me and 111 tell him what I think of him,” declared an harassed assistant yesterday at the women’s hosiery counter of a large store in Auckland after one of the busiest days on record following the statement in the House of Representatives on Wednesday by the Minister of Customs, Mr Nash, on the shortage of silk stockings. Far from heeding Mr Nash’s advice to buy fewer silk stockings and wear fine woollen ones instead, women in Auckland besieged hosiery counters at all stores from early morning. When the shops closed many had sold out of numerous lines. Infantry Brigade Exercises. On December 11 units of the Second Infantry Brigade will begin arriving at Palmerston North to take part in brigade exercises which will extend over a period from December 14, by which time all the units are to be in camp. It is stated in Palmerston North that the following units would be included: Ist Battalion, Wellington-West Coast Regiment (now in camp at Wanganui): Ist Battalion, Taranaki Regiment (in camp at Waverley); and the Ist Battalion. Hawke’s Bay Regiment (in camp at Dannevirke). In a report in Hawke's Bay it was mentioned that A Company, New Zealand Scottish Regiment (at present at Wanganui) would be included also.
