MR JOHN BALL

DEATH OF FAMOUS GOLFER. LONDON. December 2. The death has occurred of Mr. John Ball, the golfer. John Ball, an honorary member of the Royal and Ancient and Honorary Company of Edinburgh golfers created a record in amateur golf by winning the amateur championship on eight occasions. 1888, 1890, 1892, 1894, 1899, 1907, 1910. and 1912. He was runnerup in 1887 and 1895, and won the open championship in 1890, the first amateur to accomplish the feat. He won the Irish open championship in 1893, 1894. and 1899, He captained England against Scotland every year from 1902 to 1911, both included. Born in 1861 at Hoylake, he made an appearance in the open championship in 1876, when only 15 years old, and finished sixth, eight strokes behind the winner.
