BEAL' VITE & EL GOLEA AFFAIRS NEW ZEALAND PAPERS CRITICISED. AUSTRALIAN WRITER DEFENDS BOOKMAKERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, December 4. The turf writer of the “Sydney Sun” takes New Zealand newspapers to task over the incidents prior to the Melbourne Cup, involving El Golea and Beau Vite, and says that these have been featured in New Zealand from an unfortunate angle, an inference being that the incidents were inspired by bookmakers. The “Sun” adds: “While all wholesome racing people deplored the Beau Vite affair it was quite unfair to blame the bookmakers in the absence of absolute proof. The Bookmakers’ Association in Melbourne was quick to offer a reward for clearing up the El Golea attack. Moreover, New Zealand owners are not entirely satisfied with the betting conditions in the Dominion and they lose no opportunity of tackling the best in Australia in the hardest of all races.”
