GIFT DAY

SEDGLEY HOME ANNUAL EFFORT. SPLENDID PUBLIC RESPONSE. The annual gift day was held at Sedgley Home, Masterton, yesterday, in fine weather. The Home and grounds were in good order, and there was a large attendance of supporters. During afternoon tea the boys gave two items which were well received, and in addition gave a haka. In the unavoidable absence, owing to indisposition, of the chairman of the local committee, the Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich. Mr H. A. R. Dunderdale thanked all for their generous support which was very greatly appreciated by the committee and the Wellington executive. The gifts received, in spite of ‘ higher costs, etc., were greater in (quantity than usual, and as the home was now catering for more than double the number previously at the home the greater support was the more .welcome. Mr Dunderdale thanked the ladies’ committee and the Master and Matron (Mr and Mrs A. L. Hibbs) for the splendid work which had been done during the past year, which was exemplified by the healthy and happy condition of the boys and the excellent appearance of the home and grounds. He also thanked the very many people who had throughout the year assisted by rendering dental and medical assistance for the boys as well as by the gift of goods and money too numerous to mention. Mr A. S. Kempthorne, secretary of the Wellington executive, also expressed his thanks, on behalf of the society for the loyal support accorded to the Wairarapa Home and gave an outline cf the executive's plans for the future in view of the added duties which the Society had to face owing to the war conditions. It was hoped to be able to increase the available accommodation by approximately one-third and every effort would be made to maintain the essential services of the homes for the duration of the war. Many took advantage of the opportunity to inspect the home and its surroundings. A list of gifts and acknowledgments will be published during the next few days.
