At the conclusion of the judging, Mr. Wellington, gave a very interesting demonstration in connection with the calves. He was listened to with interest by those present, including a large number of children from the Carterton District High School who had assembled with then- teachers to view the judging. Mr. Eric L. Rayner, thanked the judges and particularly Mr. Wellington for his interesting demonstration. He also thanked the children for having brought their calves and lambs, and the parents for the interest they were taking in the various school calf clubs. Prior to the prize giving by the chairman and secretary, Mr. H. A. Hesse, supervisor of the agricultural instruction for the Wellington Educational Board, apologised for the absence of Mr. A. Donald and Colonel McDonald. He referred to the fact that calf clubs were introduced into the schools in 1927. He referred to the great strides that had been made in the standard of the animal exhibited. The more good calves that were reared and cared for the greater the production was going to be and that was what was required. Three years ago something like 2000 calves had been shown in these competitions through out New Zealand, today there must be fully 5000. Mr. F. C. Brockett also spoke to the children, complimenting them on their good work. Next Tuesday, commencing at 10 o’clock, the champion of champions competitions will take place on the Carterton Showgrounds. The entries will comprise calves and lambs from clubs from Mauriceville to Lake Ferry.
