GREYTOWN

SWIMMING CLUB CARNIVAL TO BE HELD ON MONDAY. ("Times-Age" Special.) At a meeting of the committee of the Greytown Swimming Club, it was decided to hold the opening carnival on Monday next, commencing at 7.30 p.m. An invitation was extended to Carterton, Martinborough and Featherston clubs to compete. A silver coin collection will be taken up. Judges and stewards were elected for the carnival, and the following programme was drawn up: Learners' race 10yds. junior boys’ 25yds. junior girls' 25yds. intermediate boys 50yds, intermediate girls’ 50yds, ladies’ 50yds. men's 50yds, backstroke 25yds, open diving, teams’ race 75yds.

CROQUET CLUB MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Greytown Croquet Club was held on Monday afternoon in the Park pavilion. Mrs H. G. Carter occupied the chair. An apology for absence was received from Mrs Ward. It was decided to hold the J-hour tournament on Saturday afternoon, starting at 1.30 p.m. Playing for the Horton Buttons this week, Mesdames Brunton and Ward defeated Mesdames Haigh and Maddison, 26/21. PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE A SUCCESSFUL STOCK DRIVE. A stock drive conducted by the Greytown Citizens’ Patriotic Committee and organised by Messrs H. W. Feast and A. N. Johnson, resulted in the “All Purposes” Appeal benefiting to the extent of £ll4 6s. The members of the committee express their appreciation to the organisers for their efforts, the donors of stock, the drovers and truck drivers, and Messrs Wright, Stephenson & Co., who conducted the sale free of charge. An additional £24 in cash has been received in lieu of stock. Greytown has to date raised £159 14s lOd towards its quota of £6OO.

Euchre Party. The final euchre party for the year was held at the residence of Mr H. Tui Morgan on Monday evening, when the prize-winners were: Ladies, Mrs A. Nichol; men, Mr A. Gregor; consolation, Miss Brown and Mr Nicholson; hidden number, Mrs Morgan. At the close of the party Mr N. S. McLeod expressed thanks to all those who had helped to make the gatherings so happy and successful. The sum of £33 had been handed to the Red Cross Society and £l2 10s to the Buchanan Home. Mr McLeod then sprang a complete surprise on Mr and Mrs Morgan by asking them to accept a fire side chair as a mark of appreciation from those who had attended the gatherings. Mr A. Gregor also referred to the kindness of Mr and Mrs Morgan. Mr Morgan, in reply, said that Mrs Morgan and he were very grateful for the gift and the sentiments expressed. It had been a pleasure for both Mrs Morgan and himself to help in connection with the patriotic efforts.
