CARTERTON
MRS M. J. DIAMOND CELEBRATION OF 98TH BIRTHDAY. ("Times-Age” Special.) Mrs. Martha Jane Diamond, who celebrated her 98th birthday yesterday was born on December 2. 1842, at Cornwall, County Waterford, Ireland, of Cornish parentage, her father being a civil engineer. When Mrs. Diamond was 14 years of'age she arrived in Australia with her parents in the sailing ship Condor, in 1856. She was married in Australia. She came to New Zealand in 1877, and then on to the Wairarapa where she has resided ever since. A birthday' party was held at the residence of Mrs. J. McKenzie (a daughter) where a most enjoyable time was spent. She was the recipient of numerous telegrams from al! parts of New Zealand. Mrs. Diamond, although not able to get about much, is hale and hearty, and can relate with interest many incidents of early New Zealand life.
SCHOOL GARDENS COMPETITION RESULTS. The following are the awards made in the school garden competitions held in connection with 'the Carterton Show: — Best school garden: Gladstone, 81 points, 1; Clareville, 79 points, 2; South Featherston, 72 points,' 3. Best individual vegetable or farm plot at each school:— South Featherston: Clive Thorn and Arthur Dick, 1; Guy Ahipene and Bob Thorn, 2; 'Trevor Snell and Ray Burt, 3. Dalefield School: Warren Rogers, 1; Jack Jamieson, 2; Lola Parker, 3. Clareville School: Harold Daken, 1; James Daysh, 2; James Daken, 3. Gladstone School: Alton Wyeth, 1; Charlie Haeata and Reg. Rangi, 2; Harry Haeata and Melma Taylor, 3. Longbush School: Hillary Devenny and Russell Rutherford, 1; Allen Hackston and lan Scott, 2; Vera McLaughlan and Jack Homer, 3. Best individual flower plot at each school: —Clareville School: Joyce Lyster and Anne Daken, I; Dawn Ray and Melva Dugan. 2; Zella Wylie and Ray Reid, 3. Dalefield School: Joan Ticehurst and Valerie McPhee, 1; Dorothy Jamieson and Colleen Rodgers, 2; Annette Fairbrother and Noreen Conwell, 3. Champion plot in all above schools, flower, farm or vegetable, awarded to the vegetable plot of the South Featherston School (Clive Thorn and Arthui Dick).
SCHOOL ASSOCIATION CARD TOURNAMENT. There wgs an excellent attendance at the fortnightly 500 card tournament which was held in the bandroom under the auspices of the Home and School Association. The prize-win-ners were:—Ladies: Mrs Jackson, 1; Mrs King, 2. Men: Mr Holland, 1; Mr Rollings, 2. Personal Items. ' Writing to his mother in Carterton, Lawrence Reid, son of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Reid, Carterton gives some interesting details of his experiences at sea. He mentioned his brother, Oliver, was in a hospital in Cairo. Dance at Belvedere. The Belvedere schoolroom should again be filled on Friday evening when another of the series of dances will be held.
