Auckland Cup and 3-year-olds. There are only two three-year-old in the entry list for the Auckland Cup. .They are Beau Leon and Night Pilot (who recently returned from Australia, where he failed to win a race). It is over 40 years since a three-year-old won the Auckland Cup. Night Pilot’s chief recommendation is that he is related to Phar Lap. A Good Record. Minko is one of the most consistent two-year-olds in the North Island this season, for she has had only five starts and has never been further back than fourth. She filled this position in the Nursery Handicap at Avondale in September and again in the Welcome Stakes at Ellerslie in October. The following day she finished third in the Musket Stakes to Pay Roll and Nuna, and at Ellerslie last month was third in the Cambria Handicap and also in the Rakino Handicap. Minko is by Ringmaster from Severe, and cost her trainer, H. Gray, 170gns at the last national sales. He now races her in partnership with Mr D. R. Revell, and they should get their money back before the season is much further advanced. Once Owned Poseidon. Sir Hugh Denison, whose death occurred in Melbourne recently, was originally Mr U. R. Robertson, and owned Poseidon when that colt in one season established a record that has never been approached. In turn, Poseidon won the A.J.C. Derby, Caulfield Cup, Victoria Derby, and Melbourne Cup. A year later he again won the Caulfield Cup with 9.3. The deeds of Poseidon inspired Mr Robertson to pay SOOOgns for a brother which was named Orcus, but who was not worth 3000 halfpence. Mr Robertson, by legal process, changed his name to Hugh Robert Denison, and he prospered in the commercial world, but was never successful in picking up another horse that even approached the class of Poseidon. Encouraging Form. Urge, who showed a good deal of prominence in the Lagmhor Plate at Ashburton, is a three-year-old gelding by Valkyrian from Spurs, by Royal Stag from Flourish, and is owned by his breeder, Mr A. S. Elworthy, this was his fourth race only, and with a little more time, he promises to make good. A four-year-old brother to Urge, to race as Force, is in G Ridgway’s stable, and is owned by Mr E. G. Bridgens, of Auckland. RACING FIXTURES Dec. 6, 7. —Whangarei. Dec. 7, 9. —Woodville. Dec. 14. —Otaki-Maori. Dec. 14—Waipa. Dec. 14. —Hororata. Dec. 21.— Manawatu. Dec. 2G. —Waipukurau. Dec. 26, 28.— Manawatu. Dec. 26, 28.—Taranaki. Dec. 26, 28.—Dunedin. Dec. 26. 30. January 1, 2.—Auckland. Dec. 28—Westland.

Riders for Woodville. Hastings riding engagements for Woodville are: First day—B. Stowe, Captain Star; W. J. Mudford, Gayest Son, Endorsement, Bunsby Belle, Kehurangi. City Song; P. Atkins, Kathbella, Kobi. Burra Sahib, Silverhope, Isis or her bracket mate, Desert Sun; W. J. Broughton, Caroline Bay; J. Campbell, Laughing Song; J. Forsyth, Hasten; D. W. Redstone, Vascones; B. Morris, Dainty Dell, Black Majesty; N. Caveney, Hyderabad; E. Deslandes, Collodion, Cullen, Lady Garvagh; T. Winiata, Nelumbo, Shani, Master Cyklon; R. Marsh, Hunting Cat, Roeon; C. Zuppicich, Dorak. Improved Hurdler. Every race is improving Saccone, and the manner in which he won the Tiri Hurdles on the first day of the Auckland Racing Club’s mid-spring meeting at Ellerslie recently indicated that he is likely to achieve more success as a hurdler, even although he is getting up in the weights. Saccone was always going like a winner and he had no trouble in disposing of the opposition when asked for an effort at the finish. He is a six-year-old gelding by Surveyor from Adi Vunivola whose form on’ the flat did not reach expectations and appears to have become more solid with a course of hurdling. A Profitable Experience. Now that Schoolgirl has successfully bridged the gap between hack and open company she is likely to reach high class in the latter grade. It is not often that an owner wins several races with the first horse to represent him, but such has been the case with Schoolgirl, who. since being purchased by Mr G. Humphries, shortly after he retired from riding; has won six races, and has had seven minor placings, for stakes amounting to £BB5.

Ellis, who has been absent in Sydney and Melbourne since early spring, is expected home this week and will make his reappearance in the saddle at Hororata. Pleading. Pleading will probably be sent south for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting at Christmas and he will be the only representative from the Chokebore stable to appear in public over the holiday period. Others likely to race at Dunedin arc Not Out, Calypso, Schoolgirl, Dispense, King’s Toast, Doria and Palfrey. A Big Two-year-old. One of the biggest two-year-olds seen at Riccarton for some time is Bascule, a colt by Foxbridge from Rose Latour, a half-sister to the speedy Eager Rose. He was purchased by Mr H. D. Greenwood at Trentham for 700 guineas. He is a (passive black and is not likely to be seriously tried out this season.
