PATRIOTIC EFFORT

GALA DAY ON SATURDAY. THE £1.000,000 APPEAL. In addition to the many attractions being prepared for the great gala, day in the Park on Saturday next, the committee report that they have been able to procure the services of a party of entertainers and fun-makers from Pahiatua. This party, it is stated, was largely responsible for the great effort made by Pahiatua in raising its quota of the £1,000,000 in a few weeks. The committee hopes that the public will support this effort to add to Masterton’s small total by attending in large numbers. As a result of Mrs. E. G. Norman opening the gardens at “Woodchester” on Sunday afternoon, a substantial sum has 'been added to the local fund, which is not being as enthusiastically supported as the committee had hoped it would be. “John Bull Calls” is the name of the local office in Perry Street. The organisers wish to point out that that sign is equivalent to Nelsons famous signal “England expects that every man this day will do his duty,” and the men (and women) of England are doing it wholeheartedly and cheerfully today. The committee feels that Masterton citizens will realise that the least they can do for the cause of freedom is to sacrifice a little of their earnings to help those who have given or lost everything of worth.
