CARTERTON

SOLDIER ENTERTAINED gathering At clareville. (“Times-Age” Special.) The residents of the Clareville district entertained Private Wiley at the Clareville Hall on Friday evening, there being a large attendance. The first part of the evening was taken up with card playing, the winners being: Ladies. Mrs R. Hannah 1. Mrs Sowman 2. Men: Mr C. Daysh 1 and Mr E. Clough 2. The room was then cleared for dancing, the music for which was provided by Mrs K. Reid, the duties of M.C. being carried out by Mr M. Humphries. At a suitable interval in the proceedings. Mr H. J. McKenzie said that they were assembled to do honour to Private Wiley, who had enlisted in the forces for service overseas. The residents were proud of the-ir guest, who was an old pupil of the Clareville School. He had been a resident of the district since boyhood and was held in high esteem. On behalf of the residents it was his pleasure to present Private Wiley with a hold-all and to wish for him good luck, good health and a safe return to Clareville. The singing of “For He's a Jolly Good Fellow followed. Pte Wiley suitably returned thanks.

CONSTABLE ROBERTSON farewelled by bowlers. During ’he afternoon lea adjournment at the Carterton bowling green on Saturday a very pleasant function was perfoarmed by the President of the club. Afr Gordon Hughan, in the presence of a large attendance of 'Carterton and visiting bowlers, when a presentation was made to Constable Robertson. Mr Hughan said that Constable Robertson, besides being a very efficient/member of the Police Force, was also a very fine bowler, having been a member of the Carterton Bowling Club for many years. He was leaving Carterton to take up his residence in Wanganui, having retired from the Police Force on superannuation. His club mates would miss him on the greens. Constable Robertson had always played the game for the game's sake. Other members spoke in a similar strain. Mr Hughan asked Mr Robertson to accept a gift from members of the Carterton Bowling Club and also a present for his daughter, who had on many occasions attended to the tea arrangements on the green. “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” was heartily sung and MrRobertson feelingly returned thanks on behalf of his daughter and himself. HEART TO HEART APPEAL SPLENDID EFFORT BY GIRLS’ CLUB. The Carterton Girls' Club are deserving, of the highest praise for the excellent result achieved in connection with the recent revue staged in the King's Theatre, Carterton, part of the funds from which were allocated to the '‘Heart to Heart” Appeal. A cheque for the sum of £4O has been handed to the Mayor. The revue was one of the best functions staged in Carterton in recent years. It is more than likely that the girls will repeat the performance in other towns for patriotic purposes. At a brief ceremony held at the back of the stage at the King’s Theatre on Friday night after the members of the Girls’ Club had contributed four items toward the entertainment to six soldiers on leave, the president, Miss C. Berrili. on behalf of the Girls’ Club handed the Mayor a cheque for £4O to go towards the £1.000,000 all purposes fund appeal. The Mayor thanked the president and members for their handsome donation and congratulated the club upon its remarkably good perform-' ance. He pointed out that the money in the fund would be used to assist soldiers while still in New Zealand, while fighting overseas and when they returned again to New Zealand.

WOMEN’S DIVISION SUCCESSFUL CARD PARTY. The weekly card par<y of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the bandroom on Saturday evfAing, the proceeds from which will IdWillocated to a blanket fund for the of England. Besides the takings at the door a well wisher donated £l. The card winners were: —Ladies: Mrs McGuinness. 1; Mrs M. Marlin. 2. Men: Mrs O’Harroran, 1; Mr Edwards. 2. At the conclusion of cards, supper was served. Terminating Building Society. At the meeting of the Wairarapa Terminating Building Society no tender was received for an appropriation by sale and a ballot was taken, with lhe result that Mr M. N. Hardie, of Martinborough was the successful member, and is entitled to £6OO free of interest. At the next meeting a sale for two appropriations of £6OO each will take place. Send-Off to Soldiers. The soldiers who had been on leave during the past week were given an enthusiastic send-off at the Carterton railway station on Saturday, when

they returned to Trentham Camp. The proceedings at the railway station were enlivened by bagpipe music played by Piper J. Mansel. District High School. The monthly meeting of the Carterton District High School will be held at the school. Holloway Street, tonight at 8 o’clock. Calf Club Competitions. The championship awards in connection with the Carterton and district schools’ Calf Club will be made on the Showgrounds, Carterton, tomorrow, when the prize-winners at the various school clubs competitions held recently will meet in the final competition for championship honours. At the conclusion of the judging the cups, etc., will be presented to the winners. Judging will commence at 11 o’clock, Personal. Mrs Diamond, of South Carterton, a very old and respected resident, is celebrating her 98th birthday today. She is still hale and hearty.
