WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING NO GAWITH SHIELD CONTEST THIS SEASON. OTHER COMPETITIONS AND TOURNEY BEING HELD. The fifteenth annual meeting of the Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association was held in Masterton last night. The president, Mr R. W. Roydhouse was in the chair. Delegates were present from the Alfredton, Carrington Park, Carterton, Featherston, Kahutara, IVlar- ' tinborough, Tinui, and United clubs. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs D. L. Taverner (Carterton), J. A. Kennedy (United), and C. J. Carle (St. Matthew’s). The United Club was admitted to affiliation for the present year. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, Mr Roydhouse referred to the effect the war was having on the game and commended the action of Masterton and Memorial clubs in amalgamating. “The game should be carried on during the war as a useful recreation,’ said Mr Roydhouse. The tournament had been a social success. The exhibition by the Australian women players and by Miss Poole had been a prominent feature of the season. Great benefit would be derived from the visit io the schools of Mr R. Howe. He considered that the local tournament should not be allowed to lapse. The election of officers resulted:— President, Mr R W. Roydhouse; vicepresidents, Messrs E. M. Hodder and G. S. McLeod; committee, Messrs N. W. Groves. P. Hawksworth. J. A. Kennedy, H. M. A. Major, R. L. McEwen; hon, auditor, Mr N. H. James; delegates to the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, Messrs D. L. Taverner and H. M. Boddington; secretary-trea-surer. Mr H. M. Boddington. Following a long discussion it was decided not to hold the Gawith Shield competition, but to carry on with the B and C grade competitions. Teams would consist of four men and four ladies and all clubs would be eligible to enter two teams. Each club was required to supply 2 pairs of balls for each match. The draw was left in the hands of the Masterton members of the committee, and all clubs were asked to make their entries within a week from the date of the meeting. It was decided to hold the annual tournament from January 22 to January 25. The entry fees would be reduced. and no cup awards would be made. Certificates were to be issued in lieu of prize money. Owing to the petrol restrictions the district ladder competition will not be held. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr H. M. Watson (Palmerston North), the oldest tennis player in the Dominion, in his indisposition. Affiliation fees were reduced from 6d a head to 3d. The Reid Rubber (N.Z.) tennis ball was officially adopted for the tournament.
