MARTINBOROUGH

SPORTS CLUB ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Martin•borough Amateur Athletic and Horse Sports Club was held last night when Mr A. Morrison presided over a fair attendance of members. Motions of condolence were passed with the relatives of the late Messrs H. L. Griffiths, C. Skill, Mrs W. Coleman, and G. Hall. The balance sheet showed a credit of £9 4s Bd, and additions to property amounting to £36 had been made. Commenting on the report, the president (Mr. A. Morrison) said that though they had not made a large profit the meeting had been very successful as a gathering of Wairarapa people, and it was evidence of its popularity. Several members were on active service with the Forces. The election of officers resulted as follow:— Patron, Mr W. J. Martin; president, Mr A. Morrison; vice-presi-dents, Messrs G. L. Sievers and G. Blundell; treasurer, Mr W. B. Martin; secretary, Mr O. Grant. The committee and delegates to the Horse Sports Association were appointed the same as last year. It was decided to hold the sports on February 8, 1941. Home Guara. During an address at the opening of the Martinborough Baths. Mr Ben Roberts, M.P., after congratulating the town on possessing such excellent baths and camping ground, made an appeal to men to join the Home Guard. He stressed the crisis the nation was passing through and hoped every man in the district would do his utmost in defence, and that there would be formed platoons in every town. Soldiers Entertained. Last night the Town Hall was crowded when a social was tendered to the soldiers on leave. A most enjoyable time was spent the programme embracing music, dancing, instrumental and vocal items, stories and conjuring acts. During an interval the Mayor (Mr C. W. Skill) addressed the soldiers present, assuring them that they would not be forgotten while away, and that on their return everything would be done to rehabilitate them in civil life. Each soldier was then presented with a gift and accorded musical honours. Personal. Mr H. Hardinge, Clerk of the Featherston County Council, was appointed vice-president of the Institute of County Clerks at the annual conference! held at Palmerston North.
