Mr S. L. Orr, assistant county clerk, Manawatu County Council, is visiting Masterton for the weekend. Dr J. Cairney was appointed by the Wellington Hospital Board last fight acting superintendent and director of clinical services for three months, following the resignation through illhealth of the superintendent, Dr A. R. Thorne. The death occurred at Mill Pa, Frasertown, of Mr James Keefe, at the age of 90 years. Mr Keefe was well known throughout Hawke’s Bay. A Maori War veteran, he saw service in the Mohaka district. The greater part of his life was spent in the Mohaka district, where he was engaged in farming, but later he took up land in the Mangapoike district. At the annual meeting of the Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association held in Masterton last night, the president. Mr R. W. Roydhouse (Carterton) paid a tribute to of Mr W. G. Bishop, former groundsman of the Masterton Tennis Club. He had given good service at many tournaments. Several members expressed regret at losing Mr Bishop's services. The Hon. H. G. R. Mason. Minister of Education, who visited Masterton today to speak at the ceremony at the Central School to mark the completion of recent renovations to the school building, inspected West School and Wairarapa College before returning to Wellington. He was met on his arrival by Mr J. Robertson. Member for the district.

Members of the Masterton Swimming Club honoured two members ol lhe Fourth Reinforcements. Corporal J. C. Haining and Private A. C. Brown, at a gathering held last night, the patron. Mr H. E. Pither. presided over a large attendance of members. Mr H. P. Glen, president was also present. In presenting the guests of honour with a diary each, Mr Pither wished them God Speed and a safe return. Corporal Haining and Private Brown thanked members for their gifts.. Dr Robert James Maunsell, single, aged 45. has died in Auckland Hospital, as the result of illness. He was the eldest son or Mr 11. Maunsell. Parnell. Dr Maunsell was born in Auckland and was educated at the Otago Boys’ High School and Otago University, where he graduated M. 8., Ch.B. Later he made further studies at Edinburgh University. He saw service at Gallipoli with the 6th Reinforcements during the last war and was invalided to Malta. Returning to New Zealand after the war, he began general practice in Wellington Six months ago he was appointed medical officer at Hobsonville Air Base
