RETURNED SOLDIERS QUARTERLY RE-UNION. (“Times-Age" Special.) The quarterly re-union of the Eketahuna Returned Soldiers’ Association was held in the Odd Fellows' Hall last night when there was a large attendance of members. Also present as the guests of the Association were several soldiers. The president. Mr A. H. Herbert, presided, and a most happy time was spent. A lengthy toast list was honoured as follows:—"The King;” "Absent Comrades” (Mr A. G. Golder); “Kindred Associations and South African Veterans” (Mr S. Daniel—Mr A. Chambers); "Eketahuna R.S.A." (Mr D. D. RyanMr A. H. Herbert); "Our Visitors” (Mr A. B. Fordyce—Private J. Kendall); "N.Z.R.S.A." (Mr T. HancockMr W. Hornblow); "The Combined Services" (Mr H. Mason); "Local Bodies” , (Mr Watson Pryde—Messrs J. B. Carruthers and D. D. Ryan); "The Chairman” (Mr A. B. Fordyce); "The Press” (Mr M. P. Shale). Enjoyable items were rendered during the evening by the following: — Messrs Max Smith. R. Walters. P. Bouzaid. and J. Kendall. Mr R. Holford was the accompanist.
CALF CLUB
JUDGING COMPETITION.
There was a large attendance at the local Domain yesterday for the annual judging of the Eketahuna group of the Calf Rearing Club, the following schools being represented: Eketahuna, Nireaha, Hastwells, Kakariki, Hukanui. Hamua, Rongokokako, and Kaiparoro. Right throughout competition was keen and the judge, Mr F. Bryant, had a hard task in making his awards. .At the conclusion of the judging. Mr F. M. Goggin, chairman of the Eketahuna Club, thanked those present for their interest in the competition. He also congratulated the boys and girls on the excellent type of their exhibits. The club was much indebted to Mr Bryant for having come along year after year to judge the entries. In replying, Mr Bryant said that he looked forward each year to coming to Eketahuna to judge. He complimented the competitors on their splendid entries, and he asked them to continue to take an interest in their calves until such time as they came into profit. The type of calf entered this year, was, if anything, slightly better than that of last year. He congratulated the club on its excellent arrangements and the continued interest taken in the calf rearing movement. Mr F. Brockett also spoke, addressing his remarks mainly to the children, and asking them to continue to take an interest in the calf rearing competition.
Mr Goggin then took the opportunity of presenting to the secretary, Mr W. J. Henderson (who will leave shortly for Woodville) a crystal salad bowl. He thanked Mr Henderson for the great amount of work he had done for the club during the past six years. He extended to Mr and Mrs Henderson best wishes of the club members for a happy and prosperous future. Mr Henderson suitably replied. Balfour; Bryant Cup, Kakariki School. An Enjoyable Gathering. A very happy time was spent at the Odd Fellows' Hall on Wednesday night when Mr. and Mrs. H. Nielsen and Mr. P. A. Peterson entertained a large number of friends, the guests of honour being Privates V. and R. Neilsen and S. Peterson. Dancing, community singing and vocal items contributed were enjoyed. After supper had been served, Messrs. G. A. Hansen and S. Daniel. on behalf of the guests, thanked the hosts and hostess for having provided such a happy gathering and extended to Private Nielsen and Peterson their best wishes for a safe return.
