LOCAL AND GENERAL

Firm’s Generosity Appreciated. The Interhouse Association greatly appreciate the generosity of the management of Messrs J. R. McKenzie, Ltd., who donated the prizes for the races among the children of the Masterton Children’s Homes at the interhouse display in the Masterton Park on Monday last.

Golden Bay Cement Co. Profits. What was left out of £14,454 net profits made last year by the Golden Bay Cement Company, said Mr J. M. Hott, chairman.at the annual meeting of the company, was £4147 for division among the shareholders. Taxation in New Zealand took £10,260 of the £14.454, taxation in Australia took £46 14s Id, and what was left went to the shareholders. Institute of County Clerks.

It was reported at the annual conference at Palmerston North yesterday of the Wellington district' branch of the Institute of County Clerks that the membership of the branch had increased by two during the past year, the roll now standing at 16 members and 19 associate members. One associate member, Mr K. E. Power (Masterton), is now on active service. "God Defend New Zealand.”

Recognition of “God Defend New Zealand” as a national anthem has come from the people themselves in Wellington. At several concerts recently when this number has been sung by choirs, 1 the audiences have risen spontaneously and stood to attention while the number was sung, swelling the chorus with their own voices on occasions, and that without any special invitation to do so. The practice will doubtless now become general—at least for the duration of the war.

Returned Soldiers’ Raffle Drawn. The drawing of the raffle conducted by the Wairarapa R.S.A. at the recent Interhouse sports meeting was conducted yesterday. The raffle was drawn by Miss Y. Foster in the presence of Senior-Sergeant Doggett and members of the committee of the R.S.A. The first prize was won by Mr. Billy Worsfold, ticket No. 27,873, and the second price by Mr. F. White, Featherston, ticket No. 27,848. The raffle yielded £27 6s. which will be donated towards the Wellington Patriotic Funds. Seamen’s Union. Rightly or wrongly, the Seamen’s Union was refusing to admit new members or readmit former members who had lost their membership because of unfinancial status, said counsel for an appellant before the Manpower Committee dn Wellington yesterday. He said he was informed that the reason for the refusal was that there were fewer ships, not enough employment, and too many men ashore without ships. His client was 36. He came ashore five years ago. after 14 years’ membership of the union, and had worked since under subsidised labour schemes. He was willing to go to sea again, but was refused readmission to the union. Gunners Court Martialled.

Six gunners belonging to the 18th Heavy Battery were brought before the District Court Martial at Battery Point barracks Christchurch yesterday with disobeying lawful commands. Evidence of consumption of a considerable amount of liquor in the barracks was given during the hearing. Bombadier C. R. Ohlson said he was in charge of No. 1 Sub-section when it was detailed for duty on November 20. Some of the men were merry. There had been a drinking bout between the sections during the afternoon and his section had held its own. He thought there were about 80 bottle of beer consumed in the barracks that afternoon. The men’s mess was an absolute “charnel house” that night, most of the men being fairly drunk. The finding of the Court will be promulgated after it has been before the officer commanding the district, Brigadier O. H. Mead. ■
