CARTERTON
T ABLE OFFICER CONSTABLE ROBERTSON RETIRES ON SUPERANNUATION. ("Times-Age" Special.) Before the commencement of business at the monthly sitting of the Carterton Magistrate’s Court yesterday occasion was taken to farewell Constable W. C. Robertson, who retires Ircm the police force on superannuation at the end of the present month. Mr. D. L. Taverner, senior solicitor of the Court, and Mayor of Carterton, paid a tribute to the retiring constable during his long residence in Carterton as senior officer. Constable Robertson had made many warm friends, all ol whom would be sorry of his departure from Carterton. Constable Robertson had carried out his duties most ably, and had been respected for the way in which he discharged them. It could be said that he had on many occasions, by his tact, turned many a young man on to the right path in life. Everything had to compliment Constable Robertson for the manner in which he had done his job. They all would be sorry at his departure. On his own behalf he had to thank the constable for many courtesies extended to him. He expressed the wish that both Constable and Mrs. Robertson and family would enjoy many years of good health at Wanganui, and that at some future time they would visit friends in Carterton (applause). Mr. H. H. Daniell (Masterton) also referred to the good qualities of the retiring constable and on behalf of the Masterton profession he wished him good luck and good health in his years of retirement.
Senior-Sergeant Doggett also paid his tribute to' Constable Robertson and eulogised his services as a constable. He wished him everything of the best in his retired life, and that Mrs. Robertson and his daughters would enjoy the best of health.
Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., said he had known Constable Robertson ever since he had been on the Bench, over a period of 17 years. He had always been a faithful servant, and had always carried out his duties with ability. Furthermore he was always a courteous officer. His wished him good health and strength and a happy retired life in Wanganui. Constable Robertson feelingly thanked everyone for their kind expressions toward himself. He said he would be glad at various times to return to Carterton and be among the many friends he had made there.
JUSTICES’ FAREWELL WARM TRIBUTES PAID. At the conclusion of court business at Carterton yesterday, Justices of the Peace in Carterton gathered to farewell Constable Robertson. Mr. Gordon Hughan said the Justices felt they could not allow Constable Robertson to leave Carterton without showing some tangible recognition to him as a police officer. He had always carried out his duties faithfully and well. Besides being associated with him in his official duties, all were connected with him, in various other walks of life, as a sport and a citizen. It did not matter when and where he was he was always cheerful. As a bowler they knew him best as “Robby.” They were all sorry he was leaving the many staunch friends he had made during his residence in Carterton. Messrs W. C. M. Sorensen, J. A. Dudson, E. T. Beaven and H. M. B. Trapp all eulogised their guest as being a man of very estiminable qualities and all were sorry he was leaving Carterton and wished him health and good luck in his retired life. Mr Hughan then asked Mr Robertson’s acceptance of a parcel containing a gift for himself and Mrs Robertson. (Applause). An apology was tendered on behalf of the Rev. W. F. Stent, who sent his good wishes. Constable Robertson thanked the Justices for their kindly thought for himself, also for his wife.
